Diabetic Eye Care
Diabetic Eye Care
Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults. Diabetics are 25 times more likely to develop blindness than those without diabetes. People with diabetes are 60% more likely to get cataracts more quickly than those without diabetes and 40% more likely to develop glaucoma than those without diabetes.
Preventative Eye Care for Diabetics
Keeping blood sugars under control is the key to reducing the risk of any eye complications. A strict diet will lessen the chance of any diabetic changes within the eyes. Routine eye exams with Dr. Cape will help monitor the progression of any diabetic changes or complications within the eye. Early detection is the key to preventing any damage from diabetes.
Diabetics are at a high risk for developing a retinal complication known as diabetic retinopathy. A diabetic’s body doesn’t use and store sugars properly. When the blood sugar is elevated too high, blood vessels in the retina (the nerve layer at the back of the eye that senses light and helps to send images to the brain) will be damaged. This damage is referred to as diabetic retinopathy.
If during an eye examination, diabetic retinopathy is found, photos of the retina may be taken or a special test called fluorescein angiography may be performed. This test consists of injecting dye into the arm and taking photos of the eye as the dye flows through the eye showing where fluid is leaking.
Medical treatment consists of intravitreal injections, laser surgery, or a surgical treatment known as vitrectomy. A retinal specialist should be consulted for evaluation of which treatment is best suited for your particular problem.
